Trampoline Safety
A trampoline is great fun and a
wonderful source of exercise for the entire family. But you must remember that a trampoline
can be dangerous. Owning a trampoline is a great responsibility, much
like owning a swimming pool. You wouldn't let young children swim un supervised and you shouldn't let them play on
a trampoline un-supervised. There have been numerous reports of injuries from trampolines and even a few deaths.
But the whole family can have fun and enjoy the trampoline if you follow the tips in this article for
trampoline safety.
Tips for Trampoline Safety
Make sure your trampoline is set on level ground. Place in an
open area, away from trees, buildings and especially electrical wires. Follow manufacturer's assembly directions
strictly. Any deviation could result in injury to you or your family.
No more than one person at a time should be on the trampoline.
There have been reported head injuries from two people colliding while bouncing on a trampoline. Children should be
supervised by a responsible adult at all times when using the trampoline.
Don't attempt fancy tricks, somersaults or flips on the
trampoline. Landing on your neck at the wrong angle can cause severe injury or even paralysis.
Learn to control your jumps. Bouncing too high makes you lose
control and you could end up falling off the trampoline, causing serious injury. Always keep your eyes on the
perimeter of the trampoline to help control your jumps. Stop your jumps by bending your knees when landing. Always
climb on and off the trampoline. Do not attempt a fancy dismount by jumping off the trampoline. This could result
in serious injury to yourself and others.
An enclosure net is a good way to protect against falls from a
trampoline. But it does not take the place of adult supervision. Always inspect the trampoline before each use.
Look for possible rips in the mat, loose or missing springs or any other parts that may look worn or need
replaced.
Never use the trampoline in wet weather or high gusty winds.
Always bounce in bare feet or slippers. Do not bounce on the trampoline in your shoes because you can damage the
mat.
Just like a swimming pool, secure your trampoline when you are
not home or it's not in use. If a ladder is used to climb on the trampoline, remove it and store it away. Getting
an enclosure net is a good idea because not only can it help prevent falls, it can also be a way to secure the
trampoline when not in use.
These are just a few important tips to keep you and your family
safe while using your trampoline. Make sure that you read and follow all of the manufacturer directions for
installation and maintenance of your trampoline. By following good trampoline safety rules, your family can enjoy
years of jumping pleasure!
